VESA DisplayHDR Local Dimming Benchmark Evaluation

Mini-LED displays utilize localized Full-Array Local Dimming (FALD) backlight zones (typically 512 to 5,000+ zones). When a high-luminance white element (like movie subtitles or star fields) moves across a dark pitch-black background, zone dimming algorithms must balance contrast against Blooming Light Bleed.

OLED / QD-OLED PanelsPer-pixel self-emissive dimming (8.29M zones on 4K). Zero blooming halo artifacts.
Mini-LED / FALD LCD PanelsDependent on zone density & algorithm response latency. Halo visibility increases at off-axis viewing angles.

Mini-LED Blooming & Halo Test FAQs

Everything you need to know about this diagnostic instrument, calibration procedures, and display technical standards.

01.What is Mini-LED blooming light bleed?
Blooming (also known as halo effect) occurs when bright objects on a dark background cause light to spill into adjacent dark pixels because the backlight local dimming zone covers a larger physical area than the individual pixel.
02.How many local dimming zones are needed to eliminate blooming?
While standard Full-Array Local Dimming (FALD) displays have 32 to 512 zones, high-end Mini-LED displays feature 1,152 to 5,000+ zones, significantly minimizing halo artifacts. Self-emissive OLED panels have per-pixel dimming (8.29M zones on 4K) with zero blooming.
03.Why do movie subtitles look glowy on my TV or monitor?
High-contrast HDR text requires peak brightness (1000+ nits) against letterboxed black bars (0 nits). If local dimming zone algorithms are aggressive, the backlight zone behind the text illuminates surrounding black pixels.
04.Does off-axis viewing increase blooming visibility?
Yes. Due to LCD panel viewing angle constraints, looking at a Mini-LED display from an off-axis angle increases light leakage and makes blooming halos appear significantly more pronounced than when viewed head-on.
05.Can I adjust monitor settings to reduce blooming?
Lowering peak HDR brightness, lowering subtitle font opacity to 75%, or adjusting local dimming strength from 'High' to 'Medium' in the OSD menu can mitigate visible haloing.
06.Is blooming considered a hardware defect for RMA returns?
Generally no. Blooming is an inherent physical characteristic of FALD and Mini-LED LCD panel backlights rather than a manufacturing defect.
07.How does VESA DisplayHDR 1000 benchmark blooming performance?
VESA DisplayHDR 1000 and 1400 standards mandate minimum local dimming contrast ratios and maximum halo luminance limits during black level test patterns.
08.Does IPS or VA panel tech suffer more from blooming?
IPS panels have lower native contrast (~1000:1) and suffer more visible haloing than VA panels (~4000:1 native contrast) when local dimming is engaged.
09.How do I test my Mini-LED monitor for blooming?
Use our interactive Blooming Test Inspector above. Toggle between moving bright squares, high-nit circles, and subtitle simulation patterns in a dark room.
10.Is blooming possible on QD-OLED or WOLED gaming monitors?
No. OLED subpixels turn off completely when displaying pure black, providing infinite contrast and absolute immunity to blooming halos.
